  17. <p>U.S. approval of the French abortion pill moves closer--but
  18. slowly
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     Step by step, the French abortion pill RU 486 has been
  21. inching its way toward approval for use in the U.S. Under
  22. President Clinton, who supports abortion rights, the Food and
  23. Drug Administration first dropped its opposition to the
  24. French-developed pill. Now comes another step. After years of
  25. refusing even to seek American permission to market its product
  26. out of fear of becoming enmeshed in the abortion controversy,
  27. manufacturer Roussel Uclaf has agreed to license the pill to the
  28. Population Council, based in New York City.

  30. <p>     Under the agreement, the nonprofit family-planning group
  31. is charged with the daunting task of finding a company willing
  32. to make the pill, as well as with setting up clinical tests in
  33. 2,000 American women, though 120,000 women have already
  34. received RU 486 from clinics in France, Britain and Sweden.
  35. Approval for marketing is years away.
